whooping crane chick successfully hatched at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge

Refuge Manager Larry Wargowsky announced that a whooping crane chick successfully hatched at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge on June 14 or 15th. This is the second natural reproduction on the Necedah Refuge. Wargowsky says it shows persistence pays-off as once again the so-called 'First Family' hatched the chick by renesting after the first attempt this spring was unsuccessful. This same pair, #11-02 and #17-02, from the Class of 2002, was also successful in 2006 by renesting. Their 2006 chick, #W1-06, has a mate and has returned to the Necedah Refuge each year after wintering in Florida twice and then with her new mate once in South Carolina last winter.
There are now an estimated 79-whooping cranes in the eastern migratory whooping crane population. The Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership will once again add more birds to this reintroduction project similar to last year with the ultralight training and the direct autumn release projects.
