PERSISTENT AND DANGEROUS HEAT WAVE

HOT AND VERY MUGGY AIR WILL RETURN TO THE AREA ON SUNDAY... POSSIBLY PERSISTING THROUGH THE ENTIRE NEXT WEEK. THIS HEAT WAVE WILL BE UNCOMMON AS THE DANGEROUS HEAT WILL PERSIST FOR MANY DAYS...INCREASING THE THREAT...ESPECIALLY FOR THE ELDERLY AND THOSE WITH PRE-EXISTING HEALTH ISSUES SUCH AS A HEART CONDITION. THIS AREA HAS NOT SEEN A PROLONGED HEAT WAVE LIKE THIS FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS. PLANS SHOULD BE MADE NOW TO ESTABLISH CONTACT WITH THOSE YOU MAY KNOW THAT DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO AIR CONDITIONING OR A COOLING CENTER. PETS AND YOUNG CHILDREN CAN ALSO BE AT RISK OF DEHYDRATION DURING PROLONGED EXTREME HEAT.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING

THIS PROLONGED HEAT WILL HAVE A LIFE-THREATENING IMPACT. THOSE WITH CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS AND THE ELDERLY ARE AT GREATEST RISK.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK...THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY...DIAL 9 1 1.
