Speed, Suspense In New Ride

If you appreciate water-park rides that feel like near-death experiences, as most of us water-park aficionados do, the new ride under construction at Noah's Ark Waterpark at the Wisconsin Dells should deliver.

Appropriately named the Scorpion's Tail, this 10-story slide starts with the lone rider stepping into a tube and onto a trapdoor, then beginning the countdown: 3, 2, 1. The trapdoor drops out, and off goes the rider, flying at about 40 mph, looping back up through the circular ride and down again. The loop is angled at 45 degrees.

As with any ride, whether a water-park slide or a roller coaster, it's the anticipation that is hardest to take. And I have to think that counting down to this plunge is going to be a special thrill, not unlike counting down to a hangman on the gallows. Of course, the good part is, this ride has a happy ending.

Noah's Ark is billing this as the first such water-park loop in the country and the largest in the world. Watch noahsarkwaterpark.com for an announcement.
